Soldiers in World War I faced situations that normal men and women would never have had to endure. Some soldiers, instead of singing songs, wrote poems or engaged in other hobbies to pass the time and express their feelings. The lyrics, or the words that make up a song, are one of the most important aspects of a song and present information and meaning behind a song. The lyrics of World War I songs offer history researchers and scholars an insight into the situations the men faced, their job duties, their thoughts and feelings about the war and their war work, and, ultimately, the their opinions expressed through songs. A song titled "The Reason Why" explains the bitter feelings of why the men were there to fight. The song states, “We are here because we are here, because we are here because we are here” (Fussell p.83). The meaning behind the lyrics shows that some men felt as if their place in the war may have been seen as unimportant, unappreciated and some may have felt they were theirs because they had nothing else to offer at home.
