The Second Amendment states: "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." This means that every person has the right to protect themselves. Many people try to speculate on what our Founding Fathers meant by “A Well-Regulated Militia.” They seek to combat the fact that gun ownership was only intended for the purpose of defending our nation. But this is not true, many gun enthusiasts believe that the Second Amendment was created by the Founding Fathers to protect citizens from government tyranny. (Cothran) Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers, said, “No free man shall ever be prohibited from using firearms.” Why do people believe that stricter gun laws on private property will reduce the number of crimes in society? The fact of the matter is that criminals are more likely to attack a target they know is unarmed and unprepared because they know the victim won't put up a tough fight. If more Americans owned guns, attackers would be afraid to rob, rape, steal, and it would also prevent murders from occurring. So why impose a restriction on private gun ownership by preventing good guys from protecting themselves while criminals obtain their guns through black markets? If a murderer intends to break a law against murder, robbery, and rape, why should he have any more respect for a law that prohibits him from owning a gun? This is the question that politicians and Americans of today's generation are not asking. Laws restricting the use of guns are not only unconstitutional, but will only increase the crime rate in the United States; so, enacting strict gun laws won't help...half the paper...etc. 1% could equal thousands of people. For Gun Control There are some people in this country who say gun control is the answer. Works CitedCothran, Helen. Gun Control: Opposing Views. Farmington Hills, MI: Greenhaven, 2003.
