Many countries believe that propaganda helps establish a necessary level of patriotism in their citizens. Most authoritarian governments, the type of government illustrated in George Orwell's 1984, use propaganda. However, the use of propaganda also limits people's freedom since propaganda can control thought and speech. Propaganda can influence people to believe that their country is the best by exaggerating positive events that are happening in their country or by showing negative events that are happening in other countries. 1984 is more about the dangers of government control over people's thoughts through propaganda than it is about the dangers of an authoritarian government system. The belief that a government always controls that its citizens can control people's thoughts and propaganda can help establish this belief. The leader of a totalitarian government is often “omnipresent, omniscient, larger than life, and semi-divine” (Roelofs 4). An omnipresent leader can institute an extreme level of obedience in his or her country's citizens because citizens may conclude that the government could determine whether citizens support most government actions by analyzing videos or other visual evidence collected by the government. The leader can compel citizens to act similarly to help create a sense of unity. In 1984, Big Brother is omnipresent and spies on all the citizens of Oceania through the façade of moving eyes on posters that say “Big Brother is watching you” (Varricchio 7). Big Brother's moving eyes demonstrate that Big Brother is continuously watching all citizens of Oceania as the average citizen of Oceania is unable to... middle of paper... situation. The government of Oceania controls the thought process of all citizens of Oceania, from members of the Inner Party to the proletariats. The citizens of Oceania accept the falseness of the government because falsehood is the only thing they learn from an early age. Many governments hide the truth to make their own country look better or make another country worse through propaganda. The absence of truth is dangerous because people who do not know the truth want to rebel because they want to seek the truth and are not satisfied until they find what the real truth is. Negative images, especially those that occur in a person's country, lead to a sense of worry because people want to be safe. The purpose of a government is to help people feel safe. In Oceania, citizens do not feel safe as the government protects itself instead of Oceanic citizens.
