Has slavery changed since ancient times? Slavery has always been a big problem and perhaps always will be. Today's problems are often negative, but did you know that in ancient Roman times they were all for it? Well, they were! The question that will be answered in this assessment is, “How, if any, has slavery changed from ancient to modern times?” I think slavery has changed a lot compared to the past. Not that there is more or less of it, but that it can be harder and have worse conditions. In ancient times slavery was a common and normal thing. In 70 AD it is estimated that there were slaves in Rome. There have been no problems or controversies about it. Slavery was widespread, and most families owned at least one slave. Today there is only one true way to become a slave, but in Roman times (rise of Rome) there were three. 1=Slavery due to crime committed. 2=Not being a Roman citizen. 3=Taken prisoner by the Romans. An example is war. Some of these may seem unfair, but the Romans believed in their superiority. There were many types of slaves who were good at different types of work. Rich families often had so many slaves that they didn't have to do any work around the house! There were other types of slaves besides those mentioned above. These were Statuliberi = Slaves freed by will of their master. Servi sub unsufructu manumissi = Slaves freed by will who remain slaves. Bona fide servientes = Free men who acted as slaves to the master. Auctorati = Free men who were gladiators, under contract to their gladiator master. Redempti = Free men captured in war and redeemed to non-relatives. They worked until they paid off their debt. Coloni adscripti glebae = Free people, sharecroppers. These slaves were not treated as a person but as an impersonal asset despite having their rights. They were sad rights but they were important to the well-being of the slaves. The rights were as follows: the slave was allowed his personal items (such as money etc.), he could not be killed without a good reason. Of course, the owners also had rights. They could treat a slave however they wanted. They could be violent, friendly or do whatever they wanted to the slave. They could defend themselves from slaves and could kill them if the master gave the courts a good reason.
