Topic > A Journey into Social Service - 1983

I have always received great satisfaction from helping others. I remember that when I was young I helped my grandmother with the chores that she was no longer able to do alone. As I grew up, my grandmother became more and more dependent on me. I helped her cook, clean, administer medications, and made sure she kept her doctor's appointments. I now see myself doing these same things for my mom and dad as they get older. I firmly believe that my need to become a social worker stemmed from the scary idea of what would happen to my grandmother and parents; if they didn't have someone to help them. I understand that not all seniors or young children are fortunate enough to have family members to care for them. I am also aware that some face abandonment and, more often than not, abuse from family members or those entrusted with their care. I feel like I can be an advocate for the elderly or children who are neglected or abused. I feel that the master's in social work program would give me the theoretical foundation and intensive training needed to become a successful social worker. I always knew I wanted to become a social worker, advocating for defenseless elderly people and young children. I knew I had to change my life to achieve the goal I had set for myself. Even though I dropped out of high school at age 16, I knew it was essential for me to go back to school; so that I can start my journey and achieve my goal. Two years after leaving school I obtained my Diploma in General Education. I enrolled in Citrus Community College and became the first in my family to receive a college degree. I decided to continue my studies at the University of La Verne and I... halfway through the essay...... as well as providing practical experience that I can confidently apply when helping others. I am fully confident that this program will provide me with the optimal tools to solve problems. My intense passion for learning has moved my life in a new and positive direction. I feel that my personal experiences and challenges have served as a foundation for growth and preparation for a life of helping others. This is why I worked so hard to complete my college education despite my many responsibilities. I believe this makes me a great candidate for this program. I am a diligent and caring person who cares deeply for others in need. I feel like everything that brought me to where I am today has shaped my life and will make me a great social worker. I want to thank you very much for considering my application for the master's in social work program.
