Topic > A Brief History of Hard Rock - 1215

The music industry has many different genres, to satisfy a multitude of listeners; but the most popular is rock. Rock has numerous genres within it, including; heavy metal, hard rock, arena rock and many more. The most popular genre would be heavy metal or hard rock. They are both very similar in “taste” and the only differences are the topic of the music and the tone of the music. Heavy metal is typically about the "darker" things in life and will have an overall deeper tone. While hard rock is considered "music for having fun" and contains a multitude of different tones. Hard rock really began in the 1970s; but has its roots in the music of the mid-60s; such as garage rock, blues rock and psychedelic rock. Hard rock began when both British and American bands began adding a greater blues influence to their music. This in turn added a harder, deeper and overall louder tone to their music. Some of the first hard rock bands were The Who, The Rolling Stones and The Kingsmen. These bands had slowly converted their music from classic soft rock, with acoustic instruments and a greater emphasis on vocals, to hard rock, with a greater emphasis on instruments. Towards the end of the 1960s more and more groups began to play this new type of music. Some bands had taken this change to the extreme and had effectively defined heavy metal; like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Led Zeppelin. But most bands continued to play hard rock, “the music of having fun.” The 1970s were known as the boom time of hard rock. At this point every rock band had made their music at least a little "heavier", to stay "afloat" in the ever-changing music industry. Throughout the early seventies the bands……middle of paper……order to stay “alive”; and if he stopped he would feel like he had let the world down and all the kids who were like him. This song was written by the band Foreigner after meeting a boy outside their door at a concert. Then they brought this guy in and showed him the plot of a rock concert. This song defines hard rock because it's not just rock, it has a big emphasis on instruments; guitar, bass and drums. It is also a "fun" song and embraces the natural vibe of hard rock.
