“An Enchanted Modern” took my mind to a deeper level. It allowed me to challenge my beliefs and try to understand the point of view of Lebanese women. Even though I found it quite challenging in the first few pages, I kept reading until I found some details that I could actually engage with and relate to. Cultural materialism played a key role in the exploration of their lives. Lara Deeb uses many aspects of the women's lives to paint a grand coming-of-age story through grand coming of age, cultural relativism, and their natural environments, but focuses primarily on how piety helped shape all of these things together. In the first twenty pages I understand the aspects of piety and being pious of Islamic women. And also how much it meant to them. They demonstrated this by showing the historical context of piety, the political commitment and the theoretical method on how exactly it is practiced. In a historical perspective it was given to them as something new and different. Not everyone was expected to confirm or follow it. Public piety was associated with the public good. The public good was linked to visibility. All this, in my opinion, has pushed people to want to improve or show examples of it with their superficial personality. Pity could be expressed in many different ways. It wasn't as if one path was the right one and was set in stone. However, a verification system has developed between Authentic and Authentication. (Deeb 2006; 20) Authentic has not been praised as much as Authentication. When I think of Authentic I think of it as taking the truth of something and twisting it so it can feel like it. On the other hand, authentication is praised because it focuses on several factors such as… middle of paper… honesty for the poor. I see good deeds every day, but not many volunteer just to show mercy towards God. Again, I have been humiliated in many of my volunteer expenses. I see the work it takes and the effort and patience it takes to maintain it. As in the saying it takes a village to raise a child, expressed thus: “Humanity is a responsibility that God has given to human beings.”(193) I realized that all human beings do not accept their own. There are many examples throughout history that exemplify why Shia women are strong and courageous. I think this story showed me a way to better myself and have a chance to understand godliness on a deeper level. I am more welcoming towards the headscarf. I find myself having more respect for these women and their cultural beliefs. It was interesting to read the symbolic meanings, their way of life, and now I feel very happy.
