John Proctor as a tragic hero John Proctor became a tragic hero in Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" brought a big problem to the village of Salem , after Procto had an affair with Abigail Williams, he began seeking revenge and began accusing people of witchcraft. John Proctor; a very respected man in Salem, who is a hard worker who always works for his family, loves his children and his wife, finds himself in a critical situation after committing adultery with a village girl. John Proctor, the protagonist of the play “The Crucible”, a respected man, a noble man who has done a lot for his family, has a big flaw: he had an affair with Abigail Williams, and in the end he realizes what he did to Salem and to Elizabeth; his wife, at the end of the play redeems herself and refuses to give up her name and sign a public confession, thus making John Proctor an ideal example of a tragic hero. John Proctor is a good man, a hard worker; who takes care of his family and a very respected man in Salem Village. Based on Proctor's statement, it shows that he tries to be a better man after what he did with Abigail, and that he regrets breaking his marriage vows, when he says “No, no, Abby. That's all” (Act I, line 408). John Proctor is known as a good man in the community, always working on his farm and is an honorable man. John Proctor, even though he has broken his marriage vows, cares for his wife and shows her respect. Due to the fact that Proctor repented, his outlook on life was positive, when he tells Abigail "You won't say anything about Elizabeth!" (Act I, lines 458-459). John Proctor dies a tragic hero, he had sinned, he had committed adultery, even though it was too late to repent, he does, but now he is known as a sinner and Elizabeth has lost faith in him, she no longer trusts him, Abigail is jealous of Elizabeth and seeks revenge, so she accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft and John won't let that happen so he confesses what he did, in the end he is hanged as a man of honor because he didn't make a public confession and didn't reveal his name, she explains because his name was so important, and the importance of a person's name, so he dies as an honorable man and is an ideal example of a tragic hero.
