In the Strange Cases of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson describes the class struggles between wealthy and disadvantaged individuals in society. The upper class men in the novel are depicted as very intelligent and wealthy, while the lower class men have less education and live with a low standard of living. Benedict Cumberbatch said that “Upper class to me means you are either born into wealth or you are a king.” Upper class individuals feel like they are lower class royalty and do not associate with any lower class individual, so it will not ruin or damage their reputation. There are many examples in the novel that talk about how upper class individuals treat lower class individuals badly or simply avoid them. At the beginning of the novel, an eight-year-old girl was walking along a narrow street in front of a building that was near the center of the neighborhood until a disfigured man bumped into her, causing her to fall. Mr Utterson, Mr Ensfield and the little girl's family decide to blackmail the mysterious man into paying one hundred pounds for running over the girl. The mysterious man walked through a strange door and reappeared with a check signed by a respected third party, Dr. Henry Jekyll. The crowd around the girl was amazed to see that she had money and everyone was making sure that the check was valid. After questioning him; the man tells them his name is Mr. Hyde and leaves. The Strange Door in the example represents a nice, mediocre neighborhood that has some dark parts. The place symbolizes the place where the lower class combines with upper class individuals. Individuals from the lower classes find themselves on the outside of the... center of the card... Venson shows readers that there is a harsh relationship between the upper and lower classes. In The Strange Cases of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde there are many examples of social class struggles. Robert Louis Stevenson describes how it is more difficult to live as a member of the lower class than the upper class. This novel shows that each class has a different attitude towards life. Upper class individuals feel that the lower class should treat them like kings and queens because of how much money and power they have. Poorer lower class people work for upper class men because they need money to survive and take care of their children. The upper class does not want to associate with someone who does not have a large amount of money and who is not the brightest student. In the history of our world the upper class will always be at the top of the lower class.
