In this assignment I will reflect on a situation that occurred during my first hospitalization. Reflection is a process aimed at making sense of all life experiences in general and nursing practice in particular (Taylor B 2004). It seeks to describe, analyze, evaluate and then inform my learning experience in practice. I chose to make sense of that experience using the reflective cycle of Gibbs' (1998) model. I will explore the bathing practice used in the hospital and how to make the bathing process an enjoyable experience. I knew that this internship experience would be different from the community internship I had previously experienced. In this clinical context, as a student I was conditioned to bathe patients first thing every morning. It seemed to be a ritual routine that the department wanted performed before patients had breakfast. The system worked well when there were few assisted washes to perform. As I am bound by the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Practice (2008) and in line with the Data Protection Act (1998) on confidentiality, a pseudonym of Zara has been used to protect the patient's identity. Staff names, department name and other information that might reveal the NHS Trust have been omitted to comply with the NMC Code of Practice (2008) and the Data Protection Act (1998). Zara was a 60-year-old lady who suffered from rheumatism arthritis and had been admitted to the acute inpatient department for chest infection and possible meningitis. Zara was a largely obese woman who also suffered from right-sided weakness and suffered from dementia. For the transfer he also depended on the hoist. She had tested positive for MRSA of the nose three days after admission and was moved to the side… to the center of the sheet… Nursing Procedures, 7th Edition. Blackwell Publishing, Oxford.
