At one point Fortunato coughs for more than a minute due to the mold that is present in the old catacombs. Montresor emphasizes to Fortunato that he does not want to risk his health in the search for wine but Fortunato exclaims that he is fine and must move on. After a long walk into the deep catacombs, Montresor chained his defenseless victim to a section of the wall. Fortunato is stunned and begs for his life. For Fortunato, there is no reason for the action and he wonders what drove Montresor to do such a thing. Meanwhile Montresor builds a wall around Fortunato. At the end Fortunato exclaims “For the love of God!” and Montresor replies, "Yes, for God's sake." Montresor then burrows into the wall and as he does so says ""Requiescat in pace." (Rest in peace) The general record is that Montresor has carried out a flawless plan and boasts of not being discovered for over fifty years. This it could be true since Montresor is on his deathbed and tells the story. The reason for the plan is explained only that Fortunato had insulted him a thousand times, and that Montresor could no longer absolve such insults. At one point, when Fortunato asks him about it Montresor family crest, replies "Nemo me impune lacessit", which is Latin for "No one attacks with impunity". This plays a role in why Montresor carries out this plan;
