This document deals with how to treat or counsel children who have been sexually abused and the long-term effects of sexual abuse that children can develop from this type of abuse . This document will consist of a counseling model that is sufficient, effective and necessary when dealing with children who have suffered sexual abuse. In this paper, gender is most targeted in sexual abuse and why most children are unaware of impending sexual abuse. Additionally, the different types of sexual abuse children can endure and why their abusers might choose them are discussed. Children who experience any act of sexual abuse need to be involved in sufficient therapy to address and overcome the traumatic event and the effects of the sexual abuse. Children should never suffer sexual abuse feeling helpless and victimized. Finally, this article will discuss an effective counseling model that can be used for children who have experienced sexual abuse. Many children who have been sexually abused do not realize the impact it has on their lives. Children are afraid to break the silence about their sexual abuse and report it due to the reaction of parents, family members or for fear of dividing the family. Children remain silent about sexual abuse because of their involvement and fear of rejection by others. Children may also remain silent because of fear of their abuser or because the abuser trained the child to believe it was their fault. Many children who never received the proper help will suffer the long-term effects of sexual abuse. It is very important to provide counseling to children who have been sexually abused at a young age. Sexual abuse can be very harmful in a child's early childhood and adolescence when it develops in the... middle of the... mental and psychological phase of life. Children who have been sexually abused will go through stages of displaying feelings, thoughts, fear, hurt, and pain that can have short- and long-term effects on the child's developmental stage and that of adolescence. Through effective play therapy in the counseling process, children will be able to adequately address the problems and experiences that have occurred. The approaches incorporated into this counseling model were Play Therapy and Child-Centered Play Therapy. The primary approach used in this counseling model was Child Centered Play Therapy. CCPT allows children who are unable to communicate effectively to express themselves verbally through children's natural language play. This counseling model has many components that make it effective in counseling child victims of sexual abuse.
