Topic > Loneliness in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

What is loneliness? Do you feel alone? Is it wanting someone, but knowing you can never have them? I don't know what your definition of loneliness is, but I know what it means to me. for me loneliness is the feeling of having no one and/or nothing that is of value to you. In the literary undertaking known as Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck. Of Mice and Men an image of solitude and solitude yet to come. Candy loses her dog, Curly's wife feels lonely, which is why she seeks the affection of Slim and Lennie. Looking at the book many may not see loneliness, however I think loneliness is everywhere in the book. Although the book is flooded with images of loneliness, the person who I think is the loneliest in the book is Crooks, however Candy is probably the second loneliest person in the book. Crooks is not the most important part of the book, however he is definitely the loneliest person in the book. Crooks isn't one to talk much. He's a wounded black man and the only person who really spoke to him was Lennie. When Lennie asks him why he's so angry, the crooks say, “...A boy goes crazy if he ain't got nobody. It makes no difference who that guy is, as long as he's with you. I tell you, I tell you, a boy gets too lonely and gets sick" (80). This is a great demonstration of how Crooks feels. Crooks is not someone who has many friends because he really can't, he is. from just in more ways than most of us could even imagine If you analyze the book and look at loneliness, particularly Crooks's, you would see that people who live alone as hustlers have difficulties and not only that is highlighted by the fact that scammers live alone. first quote but also from the quote: "Suppose you have no one... A boy needs... half a sheet of paper... a lot of money is a clear example of loneliness. I feel like Candy is alone and there are a few ways a person can interpret what Candy is saying when she says "Come in and sit down for a minute..." (24). You could interpret it as if he's just a friendly guy or as if he wants to have a human connection. I think he's showing his loneliness right from the start. Loneliness is a powerful pain and Candy feels its full weight. Of Mice and Men is an extraordinary literary feat and there are many ways the book can be viewed. It can be considered a book of friendship. Maybe it's a love book. But for me this book is a book of loneliness, a loneliness that not only Crooks but also Candy feels. Loneliness is a powerful pain and is evident in many ways in the book. Works Cited Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
