The Holocaust is a time that people will always remember and sometimes wish they could forget. It was a real tragedy, but we must remember it so we can learn from those events. More than six million people entered a concentration camp, and fewer than four million survived the camp. One of those four million people was Dr. Viktor Emil Frankl. When he first entered Auschwitz, Dr. Frankl carried with him the manuscript of his first book, but it was later taken away from him and destroyed. It was ironic, however, because he had a desire to reconstruct and rewrite that volume of psychotherapy that helped him endure the three years of prison he faced at Auschwitz. Dr. Frankl wrote Man's Search for Meaning as both an introduction to logotherapy, existential analysis, and a gripping personal account of the scariest event in modern history. Viktor Frank, a psychiatrist, documented his time in concentration camps on scraps of paper he found. When he published his book he wanted it to be published anonymously, but later decided not to because he believed that if published anonymously it would lose its meaning. His book, Man's Search for Meaning, not only documents his time spent in the concentration camp, but also has a theoretical part when he introduces his theory on logotherapy. While in Auschwitz Frankl said that his experiences there taught him the primary purpose of life: the search for meaning, which helped those who survived this gruesome experience. Frankl said that meaning came from three possible sources and those were purposeful work, love, and courage in the face of difficulty and he discusses these sources throughout his book. The first part of his story Frankl talks about… middle of paper… creating something to look forward to and experiencing the love of others can help someone recognize the meaning of life. This, and just learning lessons from the most difficult experiences, can make a person stronger. Experiences can make or break a person, it is only up to the discretion of the person to decide how to conquer that experience. Man's Search for Meaning is a thought-provoking book and psychological piece. If ever there is a time when I feel like I can't do anything or that life isn't worth living. I will remember the three different ways I can find meaning in life that Frankl mentioned in his piece. Additionally, there are many out there who have been in worse situations than me and have been able to overcome those experiences. My personal quest is to find meaning in my life and it is something I should constantly strive for.
