In The Cask of Amontillado by Edger Allen Poe the narrator, Montresor, seeks revenge against his friend Fortunato who, according to him, caused him many injuries. The story is set during the carnival period and many also celebrate Fortunato who was dressed as a clown and wore a colorful hat with bells. Fortunato had been drinking, which made him even less aware of any kind of plot against him. Montresor lures him into his cellars and easily chains him to a wall in the depths of a small crypt. Fortunato is too drunk to understand what is happening or even to resist. Eventually Montresor builds a stone wall confining Fortunato inside to die. In history we can distinguish many notable characteristics of Montresor. It may be perceived as insensitive or even a little psychotic. We get to know his personality through his motivations and actions as the story progresses. Fortunato's immolation was not spontaneous as Montresor had planned his revenge.
