Topic > Is corporal punishment child abuse? - 834

Hitting, arguing, yelling, ignoring, unnecessary touching are all examples of child abuse. Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse may be the most visible, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse and neglect, also leave deep and lasting scars. (Smith and Segal). There are four types of child abuse: physical, emotional, sexual and neglect. Physical abuse is any type of injury that a child may receive, such as scars, bruises, and other visible injuries, which can occur due to hitting, slapping, kicking, and other types of violence. Emotional abuse is the use of defamatory and hurtful words that can deeply hurt a child. Such as constantly yelling or threatening and making negative comments. Sexual abuse is any type of exposure to a sexual situation that a child may experience, whether it is unnecessary touching or exposing the child to pornographic photographs. Neglect is the most common type of child abuse. Neglect of a child means not being able to provide for a child's proper and adequate needs such as shelter, food, or clothing. All of this is considered child abuse and it doesn't seem like some would think that corporal punishment is part of the list of child abuse. Corporal punishment should not be considered child abuse, whether at home or in public schools, because it has been used in society for hundreds of years and has been proven to be an effective and suitable punishment for children. Corporal punishment: Punishments of a physical nature, such as caning, caning, or beatings. (Farlex). Corporal punishment is primarily thought of only in schools, but can also include some sort of punishment in the home. Most Americans consider it an effective way to discipline. (butler).
