The Ashanti people live in central Ghana, West Africa, approximately 300 km. away from the coast. This is one of the main Akan ethnic groups in Ghana, colonized by the British until 1957. For this particular group, family and maternal clan are very important. A child is said to inherit the soul or spirit of the father (ntoro) and receives flesh and blood (mogya) from the mother.
