Topic > The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost - 1005

In the course of our daily lives and life in general, we are often faced with numerous important decisions, decisions that can, and often do, result in an unanticipated future. The choices, some practically identical, lead to different destinies and sometimes leave one asking the question "what if?". There will hardly ever be signs that show us the path to take or the choice to make, much less the right one to make; we have to discover what awaits us on our own. In the poem “The Road Not Taken,” author Robert Frost tells us, the readers, that choice in a symbolic way, representing perhaps any major decision in life. The traveler in Frost's poem must blindly decide between two very similar paths, and this decision greatly influences his future life and perhaps leaves him continually wondering what possibilities the other choice might have held. “The Road Not Taken” is written in narrative form and the poem consists of four stanzas. It is considered one of Frost's most popular works and one of his most discussed. Many interpretations of this poem have been made, but Robert Frost himself explained that the inspiration came from his close friend Edward Thomas, a fellow poet, whom he met in England around 1912. The poem is said to be a gentle take on round of indecision, particularly the indecisiveness that Thomas had shown during their many walks together in England and the remorse he would have towards the path they had chosen. Robert is said to have even told Thomas that: "No matter which road you take, you will always sigh and wish you had taken another" (website). I believe it is also a mockery of human behavior and humanity's dissatisfaction and curiosity on the one hand, and also to shed light on the fin... in the center of the card... and always in mind. Symbolizing the power of many possibilities and circumstances in life is the fact that the decision made between two paths, which initially seemed so equal, can and will make a difference. We come to the conclusion that the “way” actually “leads to the way” and there is usually no turning back. However, one path in life that may seem very similar to another always contains subtle differences that usually lead to different outcomes. Human beings live in uncertainty, making it difficult for an individual to be completely satisfied with the path they choose to take in life. Although an individual may gain many opportunities along the way, the fact is that the individual will never know what could have happened if they had chosen the other path and will never know what they may have missed in life's journey, always leaving them wondering “The road not taken”.
