Topic > The Role of Parents in School Shootings - 1204

When children commit a horrible act like a school shooting, their parents often look for someone or something to blame rather than looking at what role they, as parents, may have played had in the school shooting. the tragedy. The oft-targeted entertainers, video game developers, teachers, pharmaceutical companies, and writers are rarely, if ever, responsible for such tragic outcomes and, unfortunately, often become victims as a result of lawsuits filed in an attempt to attribute they're to blame. Parents of dangerous children must be examined and sued along with every other entity accused of the heinous crimes committed by the children. When 2 young men, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, went on a shooting spree in Littleton, Colorado, killing 15 people, including themselves, there was a public outcry over censorship of all entertainment and changes in gun laws despite the Eric Harris' journal entry titled "Last Wishes" demanded that no one be blamed except him and himself. Klebold, for the massacre (“As You Were”, par. 2). After the 1999 school shooting, now known simply as Columbine, a “Newsweek” column showed that “about half of all Americans want to see the movie industry, the television industry, the video game makers, the The Internet and gun manufacturers and the NRA make important progress on policy changes to help reduce teen violence” (Alter, para. 1). According to Dave Cullen in his article "Let the Litigation Begin" several lawsuits have been filed against the parents of the two boys responsible for the shooting claiming that the families of Harris and Klebold "breached their duty of care" by allowing their children to accumulate a heritage cache of illegal weapons (Cullen, par. 5). Although the boys' parents denied these allegations, they settled out of court for $1.6 million (Cullen, para. 5)... mid-paper... strange or "reckless." He advises letting children resolve their “struggles” in their own way, unless they are in imminent danger (Bettelheim 325). It is the responsibility of parents to guide their children in all their activities. If parents fail to guide their children, or even go so far as to arm them, then the parents are just as responsible for the tragic end result as the video game developer who “taught” the child to shoot or a musician who told the child to "go kill himself", in the lyrics of a song. Parents need to realize that they are the most influential people in their children's lives from the day they are born. It is up to parents to try to teach their child the difference between fantasy and reality; how to interpret theatrics intended to sell tickets; how to interpret the true meaning behind seemingly violent content in their entertainment.
