In addition to the large amounts of racial discrimination that took place during the mid-1930s and within the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, another type of discrimination widely seen in their internal was that of gender discrimination. Women were heavily discriminated against during the 1930s. They were expected to follow a strict moral and behavioral code that was not expected of men. They were expected to act passively, sensitively, and privately while men could act actively, rationally, and publicly. ("Kill"). In the novel, Scout is the main character and is seen as a tomboy, as she never followed what the community around her deemed acceptable. She always broke the mold of the perfect 1930s little girl. In one scenario within To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout was reflecting on how her Aunt Alexandra views her regarding how she acts and dresses. “Aunt Alexandra was fanatical about my clothing. I could not hope to be a lady if I wore trousers; when I said I couldn't do anything in a dress, she said I shouldn't do things that required pants. Aunt Alexandra's vision of my behavior included playing with small stoves, tea sets, and wearing the Add-A-Pearl necklace she gave me when I was born; besides, I should be a ray of sunshine in my father's lonely life. (Law 74). This quote expressed the opinions that society had regarding how women and girls were expected to dress and behave during this time period. Her aunt finds it unacceptable that she wears trousers instead of a dress because it is considered unfeminine. She also believes that Scout should play with toys meant for a young woman, such as dolls. By...... middle of paper......ras Flee: a historical perspective of their persecution. Np, nd Web.
