Sovereignty(1) Sovereignty means "supreme and independent power or authority in government possessed or claimed by a state or community". (Dictonary.com) First of all, sovereignty is vital to the survival of any country. Singapore's sovereignty is anchored in a cohesive society, economic development and our military vitality. Furthermore, Singapore has always prioritized its security and its security policy is built on the “dual pillars of deterrence and diplomacy”, a rationale supported by its leaders. (Eugene Lim, 2013, para. 3). Secondly, it is a small country, which makes it more difficult to protect its sovereignty as other countries can easily take over in the event of war, causing a high threat of terrorism. Furthermore, the lack of natural resources necessary for economic growth makes Singapore difficult to survive. Therefore, Singapore has to rely on other countries to obtain its resources such as water, timber, food, etc. Furthermore, maintaining good relations will give Singapore an advantage, since in times of grave difficulties, other countries can help Singapore. On the other hand, the government protects and fights for people's rights. So, if an undisciplined government that does not care about its citizens can affect the sovereignty of the country, problems such as war will start to arise, due to disagreement between the government and the people. Additionally, not many Singaporeans are interested in joining the military, which makes it difficult. as Singapore's defense will weaken due to lack of manpower. About a third of the men in the military are former soldiers. Due to the growing economy and the fact that it is one of the safest countries, Singapore's sovereignty will be threatened because many people will want to rule the country.
