Topic > Why I Want to Earn a Graduate Level Degree - 2516

Many reasons convinced me to pursue a graduate level degree in social work. First of all, the level of education has significantly increased in the field of social work, especially regarding social work in the health field. Most healthcare jobs require a bachelor's degree, especially in my hometown of Kamloops, British Columbia. I hope to do case management in the healthcare industry and most of my colleagues have said that I would most likely not be a candidate for this position if I did not have a college level education. Additionally, I have invested my time in a career that I hope to continue for the rest of my life and that being said I want to have options and flexibility of opportunities in the social work field. Considering that social services offers such a wide range of services, it is in my best interest to give myself maximum exposure to opportunities, and earning a degree will allow this to happen. Second, earning a college degree allows me to work at higher-level jobs, which in return provides job security, which is important to me because I have a young family and they rely on me to provide for them. With higher education comes more stable income and job security, especially in British Columbia's competitive social service market. Most social workers recognize that a college degree is necessary to secure a job. Third, no one in my family has ever been to college; I am the first to enter post-secondary education, so for my personal goals I hope to pave a new path for my lineage. I want my family to know that college is accessible because I have proven that higher education has positive outcomes both personally and professionally. Fourth, the main reason for me to get a college degree is…middle of the paper…believing that by simply writing down these goals they will manifest and I look from where I came from to where I am now and where I can be in the future. I am very excited to advance in both the academic and professional worlds, most importantly I am excited about the positive effects my journey will bring to other clients, family, friends and colleagues. Since these people will also influence my journey positively, from my point of view most things are circular and transactional. We all contribute to each other in one way or another. In conclusion to this question, I would like to thank the committee for taking time out of their busy lives to contribute to us, future graduate students, and I am excited to take the next step in my life, which is undertaking a graduate program of study. Once again thank you for your time and consideration. I will patiently wait for your reply.
