Topic > Advice for a struggling newspaper - 696

What advice would you give to a newspaper struggling with declining readership, circulation and advertising revenue? The first thing I would recommend is to get all the editors, all the writers, all the executives and all the journalists in one room so it's easier to hear other people's opinions. The topic of discussion at that meeting would be ways to improve readership, circulation of newspapers (mostly print but also digital) and ways to increase advertising revenue. I would start by asking for examples of what kind of stories they have published and I would ask what the quality of the stories that are being printed is. If the stories were poorly written, I would advise publishers to examine them more carefully before printing anything. If the stories weren't interesting at all, then I would tell them how to make them more appealing to the audience. For example, I would tell the writers, reporters, and editors of a failing newspaper that stories must have an interesting headline that will draw attention to the paper. If a story is on the front page and has a very interesting headline, this story will most likely entice the reader to continue reading. Now, if the stories are excellently written, then it will help the newspaper to win back the readers. If the newspaper is having problems with the proper circulation of their paper, then they should probably consider going digital with the news they are writing. The only thing journalists, writers and editors need to do is simply learn how to properly write about news that should be intended solely for digital purposes. Having a digital newspaper is much simpler and more convenient, but this has caused some problems... in the middle of the paper... for many readers. Most people who read the print version of a newspaper are older people within society and young people, such as teenagers, rarely read the newspaper. The vast majority of young people today do not read the print version of a newspaper because they do not have very easy access to a digital or online version of the same print paper. It's almost an advantage that they don't have to buy the newspaper at all. There is a small chance that in twenty years there may be newspapers. These newspapers that have stood the test of the digital age may not have many print newspapers in circulation. Newspapers that still exist after twenty years may have most of their content/advertising online. This is only a result of the demand for continuous new information that the digital age has brought to our society.
