Finally John can't take it anymore and decides to give up his good name and tell the truth that he is a libertine. The pain that John feels and the guilt is also seen from the quote "A man will not throw away his good name" (p. 115) which shows that he is thinking of his wife before even considering himself or the problems he may face face in the near future. John begins to see what madness he has caused and believes that the only way to stop him and show Elizabeth he cares will be to confess and prove Abigail guilty of fraud and lying. Unfortunately, Judge Danforth does not find this claim valid and arrests Proctor for contempt of law
