Women are not only beautiful, but equal Since the beginning of time, women have struggled to achieve equal status in society. The vast majority of women rebelled against the norm of equal status. As if the dirt is washed off our hands, women are forgotten for all their successes. The identity of women in the Western world has evolved from domesticity and subservience, and has shifted towards valuing them as individuals with intellect, talent and independence. The culture of female empowerment has been reflected in literature and history throughout many eras. In a famous 20th century novel – Kate Chopin's Awakening – Edna, the protagonist of the novel, exemplifies the domestic identity of women. She is forced to stay at home with her two children, but when she decides to free herself from her domestic responsibilities, she is frowned upon by society. She is stifled by society's beliefs about women and distances herself from the philosophy of rebellion. Edna breaks the bond of loyalty she and her husband had by cheating and fantasizing about other situations in which she was not married. He rarely experiences regrets and often emphasizes the motif of freedom through a dovecote; which allows the reader to symbolize his freedom through the thought of birds. Kate Chopin uses The Awakening to express society's feminist views on women; explains the burden that women are forced to carry. Edna is subsequently overwhelmed by the pressure that society puts on her, this leads her to involuntarily commit suicide: “The exhaustion pressed and overwhelmed her. Perhaps Doctor Mandelet would have understood if he had seen it, but it was too late; the shore was far away from her and her strength was gone” (Chopin, 126). In the late 1900s, Al...... middle of paper ......but so are their male counterparts. Husbands are affected, children are affected and friends are affected. The idea of sexism is not enforced by the opposite sex, men, but is cultivated by those who accept and abide by society's expectations regarding the reality of women. As Kathleen Hanna once said, “While sexism hurts women most intimately, it also hurts men gravely.” Every human being has their own mind, their own decisions; if we let other people boss us around and make choices for us, we lose our sense of individuality and uniqueness. Sexism is a choice, a way of thinking that we can choose to accept or deny. It affects the self and the community as a whole and should not exist. Since we can accept that the world is full of tribulations such as sexism, it is not a concept that cannot become extinct, rather, it should be used as a counterexample of how we should behave in society..
