In this essay I will explain what the Schlieffen plan was and why it didn't work step by step. It all started when Germany declared war on Russia and France. However their allies Great Britain and Belgium stepped in to help while Austria-Hungary was allied with Germany. The Schlieffen Plan had been created by Alfred Von Schlieffen but he had died before the start of World War I. The plan had to be foolproof. First of all, Germany planned to quickly defeat France by marching through Belgium before Russia could get involved. The aim was to avoid a war on two fronts. Germany believed that it would take Russia six weeks to mobilize its troops. Germany would hold back the French at the frontier with their weak forces and subsequently block the Russian advance in the East with a small German army. Unfortunately the Schlieffen plan failed, I will explain why the plan failed as follows. First, I will write about how Belgium resisted Germany. The first plan to defeat Belgium on 4 August 1914 failed because Belgian forces were unexpectedly able to hold back the German advance in a short period of time. It took only 3 days to delay the invasion. At this point, Germany had miscalculated the strength of the Belgian forces. Although Germany used its “Big Bertha” artillery to destroy Belgian forts at Liège, Namur, and Antwerp, Belgium was still able to retaliate, creating a continuing threat to German supply lines in the north. The Belgians had sabotaged at the speed of light on which the success of the Schlieffen plan was based. Next I will talk about how the British Army was more effective than Germany expected. Germany, however, said that Britain would not intervene to help Belgium... in the middle of the paper... as expected. In my opinion, the changes made by the German generals were the worst tactic that contributed to the final failure of the Schlieffen Plan. If the German generals had resorted to their initial plan, the French army would not have been able to retreat to Paris, so all German forces could have fought against the Russian front instead of having to send part of their troops to fight. against the Russian front rather than having to send some of their troops to also fight against the English, Belgians and French, thus weakening their ability to achieve victory.
