Topic > Should abortion be legalized? - 1077

The topic I chose for my argumentative essay concerns the topic of abortion. Abortion has been a controversial topic for a long time. The dictionary definition of abortion is “A medical procedure used to terminate a pregnancy and cause death of the fetus” (Merriam-Webster). Many people believe that this procedure is wrong and unethical. These people, classified as “pro-life,” often forget that making abortion illegal does not mean that abortion will be stopped. In fact, making abortion illegal will increase the number of unsafe abortions, which can cause a much higher mortality rate among women seeking abortions. This makes the term “pro-life” somewhat ironic due to the future implications of their decision to make abortion illegal. The first argument in favor of maintaining the rule of law is in the case of rape victims. In 1996 the Medical University of South Carolina conducted a study and found that there was about a 5% chance that women who were raped would become pregnant. This meant that each year in the United States approximately 32,000 women became pregnant as a result of rape. Of these 32,000 women only 32.2% decided to keep the baby while the majority of women decided to have an abortion (NCBI). Those who do not support abortion believe that the raped woman should be forced to keep the child even if she is not financially, emotionally, or mentally up to the task. The child that the new mother is now responsible for may struggle every day with being disadvantaged, which is not a good situation for any child to find themselves in. This means that women who are victims of rape do not make a decision about what they want to do. do with your body regarding pregnancy, instead the law does it. This violates freedoms, and those freedoms should remain as they are. As Spock said in Star Trek "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Despite everything that has been said in support of abortion, abortions should be a last resort. People should not limit the rights of others based on their personal morals. Sometimes abortion is the best solution and who's to say it isn't? If abortions were made illegal they could cause more deaths than they actually save. This problem can be prevented in both cases. Whether you are “pro-choice” or “pro-life,” you should agree that schools should implement lessons that teach safe sex rather than shield their children from the reality of sex and its repercussions. This gives teens the awareness they need to make an informed decision and reduce the number of abortions in the future.
