Steroids in Baseball Baseball was supposed to be a sport that people could play and have fun while doing it. This was the case for a while, until drugs like steroids started to become more accessible. There's been a conversation going on lately about cheating in sports. Of the four major sports in the United States, baseball is the most talked about when it comes to cheating. It's not just a problem in Major League Baseball. Kids playing in college use steroids. Nowadays, athletes do their best to find a way to cheat, but that couldn't be more true when it comes to baseball athletes. They will do anything to gain an advantage against their opponents. According to Todd Jones, “the rules of baseball clearly state that you cannot use any foreign substance on the baseball to gain an advantage: no pine tar, petroleum jelly, sandpaper, shaving cream, anything. The rules also say that hitters cannot manipulate their bats to give them an edge” (38). The rules are out there for everyone to learn and follow, but it wasn't that long ago that, to be precise, Michael Pineda of the New York Yankees received a 10-game suspension last month for using pine tar while playing against the Boston Red Sox. . Whether it's pine tar or steroids, the integrity of baseball players will always be called into question. There will always be cheating in baseball, and no matter how stringent the drug testing program; players will always find new ways to use steroids. Before steroids, baseball players used amphetamines also known as greenies. Unlike steroids, greenies were more acceptable to players; “The pills gave the players energy, helping them get through a series of difficult matches, a schedule of 162 matches played in 182 days. The only thing a player had…half the card…prices. Now that the game has gotten so big, Major League Baseball no longer wants to be tied to those who helped it become the multibillion-dollar empire it is today, but eliminating the steroid era won't be easy. pressure to do well, especially for those who enter the game with high expectations from the fans and everyone else. Steroids are a big problem in baseball, but they have contributed greatly to popularizing the game. Many more people are fascinated by baseball than ever before, but when it comes to steroid use in baseball, there will always be players who use steroids. No matter how rigorous baseball's testing program, players will find new and creative ways to cheat. Players are getting faster and stronger through the use of steroids. Like many players like Barry Bonds, some will never be caught.
