Topic > Who is People magazine's intended audience?

Have you ever looked through a magazine and found it really interesting? This is because you are part of their target audience. You are part of a group of people that the magazine tries to reach. There's a reason Sports Illustrated is more of a men's magazine and Family Circle is more of a women's magazine. The people who run that magazine put certain things in those magazines to attract their audience. Most commonly, men are interested in sports and everything to do with sports. In Sports Illustrated, the reader would find sports, and that was it. The reader would not find an article titled “How working women balance career and home life.” An article like this would be found in a magazine like Family Circle, as it is aimed more at women who have families. For the purposes of this visual audience analysis, I will be talking about the October 8, 2012 issue of People magazine. Looking at this issue and reading the magazine, it is clear that the publishers have a target audience in mind. This visual analysis will discuss who your target audience is and how the reader can tell. Additionally, the essay will discuss how the magazine makes the advertisements relevant to its audience. To start, People magazine's target audience is women between the ages of eighteen and thirty-two due to the topics of the articles and advertisements. Women would have at most a high school education because many advertisements are for items that are not very expensive. Those women would be white and located in the states of California or New York and that's because most of the women in the photo are white. The reason for California or New York is because women in these areas have… half the paper… This is inferred because the articles are about current celebrities and their lives. These would interest those women more than they would interest a fifty year old man. It can also be said that the reader will not see an article about fishing in People magazine because it is not relevant to the target audience. Magazines also have advertisements that might appeal to that target audience. People post advertisements for items like makeup and facial cleanser that are aimed at young adult women and not an older woman who is in her sixties or seventies. As in the articles, it can be said that the reader will not find advertisements for Viagra or Copenhagen chewing tobacco. It is not relevant to the target audience. This is how a magazine is successful and sells many issues. It wouldn't sell as much if it didn't stay focused on a particular target audience.
