Topic > Analysis by Fray Bartolome De Las Casas - 1479

Some think that Las Casas never truly understood the natives as he was still trying to convert them to Catholicism and ultimately to a new Spanish culture. In this way some historians argue that he simply tricked the natives into supporting him by offering them protection and hope for the future. Some also criticize that Las Casas had no idea what was really happening in Latin America as he was constantly traveling back and forth to Spain arguing with almost many philosophers. Overall he remained in the New World for very short periods of time, yet they still continued to call him the Chief of the Indians (Hidalgo). After taking all these different opinions into consideration, it is still obvious that without Las Casas the indigenous peoples of the Americas would have been treated much more harshly. He worked hard to pass many laws in their favor and ultimately dedicated much of his life to them. These critical opinions of Las Casa's ways may be accurate but should not reflect people's overall image of him
