Many papers, books and articles have been written about Lee Harvey Oswald's motivations for killing President John F. Kennedy. No one knows for sure exactly what motivated him in this horrendous act, but it has been speculated that a fatherless upbringing or his mental health contributed to him being the most notorious killer of the twentieth century. Lee Harvey Oswald had a difficult childhood. He grew up without a father figure in his life, so he lacked direction from the most important source (Biography: Lee Harvey Oswald). His father died two months before Oswald was born, leaving his mother with three young children. As a result, "his mother often neglected and left Lee with various babysitters" (Diamond). These babysitters reportedly abused him, beginning a pattern of violence that lasted throughout his life. As a young boy, when his mother was no longer able to care for him, Oswald was sent to boarding school. This gave him yet another feeling of rejection. His family moved around a lot, which explains his “outsider” mentality. It had an effect on him because "he had lived in over twenty different cities by the time he was seventeen" (Diamond). One such move was to New York City. While there Oswald was sent to a juvenile reformatory. This brief stay offers insight into his mental state. “There he had a psychiatric evaluation that found that the seventh grader had a “strange fantasy life, centered on themes of omnipotence and power through which [he] tries to compensate for his current shortcomings and frustrations.” Although treatment was recommended, it was never received. His mother seemed almost sad about having children because she “complained noticeably about how unfairly… half of the paper… heb.
