The mindset that society imposes on most high school athletes can take away from the academics and other opportunities they may have for their future. Many high school football athletes focus primarily on one thing during their high school years: sports. Exhibit 1: In cities like Odessa in Friday Night Lights, players become engulfed in the allure of soccer and neglect most non-soccer-related things, rather than balancing sports with academics. "He was a phenomenon Trapper had seen dozens of times before, a boy so caught up in everything that there was no room for anything else, another boy for whom nothing in life would ever be so glorious, so fulfilling as playing at high school football. Trapper did not see the game as a savior for these kids. He saw it as "the kiss of death" (Bissinger 284). to the point of being negatively affected by this mentality. The days when they played football would be the highlight of their lives, because they neglected everything else...
