Another example of this is Odysseus' agreement with Kirke when he states, "Or burn me first a great oath, if I do so, you will no longer work any spell against me (10:387-388)." Therefore, Kirke agreed, and Odysseus “entered Kirke's perfect love-bed (10:390).” Odysseus' actions are not acceptable in modern society. In fact, it is considered immoral to have intimate physical contact with another woman during marriage. Although the definition of marriage may differ in various cultures, the man and woman in marriage should be each other's one and only partners in modern society. Therefore, people should not look at Odysseus as a guideline or example. Different cultures and different time periods result in different characteristics that people value. Devotion in marriage is currently one of the characteristics that people admire and appreciate. Odysseus may have difficulty understanding this concept since he lived in a different time period or, more accurately, a different world than ours. He may feel as if he is still loyal and devoted to his wife,
