Topic > One Culture: The Mission and End of a Culture

Both films attempt to show that the relationships between the native Indians and the Spanish are more complicated than "the Spanish came and destroyed everything solely for malicious purposes." In “The End of a Culture,” it explains how indigenous people initially greeted colonizers like Columbus and Cortez with kindness. Many Spanish priests truly believed they were saving the natives. In “The Mission,” the Jesuit priests developed a friendly relationship among the natives. Although the indigenous population was eventually completely dismantled, these priests ended up remaining with the indigenous people until their deaths, even when it meant betraying the Spanish.
