Hamlet's Mortal Mourning Produces a Fatal EndIt is an innate human quality to fear death and what is to come; it is the fear of suffering and anguish. People typically grieve the loss of a friend or loved one. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet's obsessive thoughts about the deaths of others lead to his timely demise. The death of his father, Ophelia, and Polonius have different impacts on Hamlet's state of mind. His father's death evokes vengeful thoughts of killing the king. Ophelia's death distorts Hamlet's view of death. Polonius' death shows the repercussions of Hamlet's aggressive impulse. Clearly, Hamlet is fascinated by death throughout the play. Although this is deeply rooted in his character, his obsessive thoughts are the product of ongoing grief. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet learns from a ghost about his father's brutal murder. Hamlet cries and plans to act but does not follow through. Instead he plots his revenge and waits for the perfect moment to avenge King Hamlet. The ghost of Hamlet's father influences Hamlet to seek revenge which would otherwise contemplate the subject to death, GHOST: to avenge his foul murder and the most unnatural murder. HAMLET: Murder? GHOST: Murder is very repugnant, as at the best of times, /But this is very repugnant, strange and unnatural. HAMLET Make me haste to know; that I, with swift wings /Like meditation or thoughts of love, can sweep away my vengeance (I, v, 25-31). Notably, the ghost tells Hamlet to enact his revenge in the opening scenes of the play; he seems hesitant, as if questioning death for the first time. Hamlet wants to make sure that Claudius actually killed his father, so he arranges a play to reconstruct the crime scene, and according to the content of Hamlet, Claudius shows...... middle of paper...... death of him. Hamlet's obsession and numerous contemplations on death lead him in the unwanted direction of suffering over the deaths of his father, Ophelia, and Polonius, all of whom he believed to be undeserving. His willingness to continually put himself in situations that cause him great emotional stress is astonishing, and his change in attitude regarding his indecisiveness regarding murder is not beneficial, in fact it ultimately kills him. Having a healthy fear of death is normal: you need to realize that death is inevitable, while constantly thinking about death creates unhealthy anxiety. An overdose of death-related thoughts will unbalance the mind from the basic fear of pain or suffering. The result of fearing death too much is to overly amplify stress in a normal situation. Staying at a level of death awareness is healthy and can help you stay alive longer.
