Emotions play a significant role in our daily lives, especially for our overall well-being whenever we share these experiences with other people. The ability to express and interpret emotions is an important skill that everyone can improve and which would greatly benefit their interpersonal communication. Our expressions accompany our emotions; they serve as windows that let other people know what we feel inside. There are several factors that influence how we communicate our feelings. The main explanation for the differences in how people express their emotions is based on biology. First, our biological sex is the best predictor of the ability to detect and interpret emotional expressions (Swenson & Casmir, 1998). Our gender can influence how receptive we are to the feelings of others, regardless of whether that person is the same gender or a different gender than us. Usually, people are generally better at recognizing the emotions of the member of the same sex (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor, 2007). The definition of man or woman is also influenced by the culture in which one grows up. Typically, most boys are taught to be rough even at a young age and are even encouraged by most fathers to play rough with other boys their age. Crying is a very discouraged emotion because it is seen as a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it is acceptable for girls as society teaches them to be kind and caring. This probably explains why males are usually more aggressive and competitive than females. These also go hand in hand with the social roles of men and women in society. Our occupations can also hinder the expression of our emotions, as we are expected to behave pleasantly even if we don't actually feel that way. For example, ...... middle of paper ...... t works in our daily lives and relationships. Our culture is a determining factor in how we can act and show our feelings to people. The social conventions in our culture also serve as a guide as to what the correct behavior should be when we carry out our social roles in the society in which we live. There are times when people choose to present artificial emotions due to anxious situations. they are dealing with, thus refusing to reveal their feelings to others. A person's personality also has a huge influence on how they understand and convey expressions; just as our personality shapes our emotions, our emotions in turn also influence our personality. The people we socialize with can often influence our feelings as we do the same to them. As has been noted, these are all factors that influence the expression of our emotions.
