There are philosophical forces that compose and direct every nurse's practice. Burkhardt and Nathaniel (2008) note philosophy as “the intense and critical examination of beliefs and assumptions (pp. 27). One incorporates knowledge and beliefs to constitute one's philosophical strengths. Possessing exceptional philosophical strengths allows you to be respectful, well-rounded, and possess good character. Some examples of ways in which one has been respectful of another person's beliefs will be discussed in the next paragraph. A few months ago, there was an experience with a patient of a different religious background. This particular patient needed a blood transfusion, but opted out for religious reasons. It was necessary to respect the patient's wishes and continue to provide him with appropriate nursing care that was within the scope of his religion. There was also an experience with a nurse of a different religious background. This particular nurse's religion involved a prayer ritual that required her to pray at different times throughout the day. One respected that nurse and watched over her patients while she was away. As a nurse, you must be respectful and accommodating towards each other. One's philosophical strengths go hand in hand with the philosophy of practice. Ethics and values are embedded in the philosophy of practice. Burkhardt and Nathaniel (2008) note that philosophy of practice “focuses on the critical examination of assumptions about norms or values and includes ethics, social and political philosophy, and philosophy of law (pp. 28). The development of ethical values begins in childhood and continues to progress into adulthood. They are influenced by society, knowledge and experience. Ethical values are used when doing...... middle of paper ......es the use of electronic motor vehicles. In provision 9, the responsibilities of the nursing profession and their associations are described. This includes creating certain standards of conduct and using the Code of Ethics. It also describes that nurses can work politically to create social change (American Nurses Association, 2011). Every day we respect the Code of Ethics, which contributes to the nursing profession. One even volunteered at a homeless shelter, providing assistance to people in need. These provisions are imperative to the nursing profession and help shape nursing practice. The ANA's scope of practice, Ohio state legal regulations, philosophical forces, and ethical principles all relate to professional nursing and how nursing is practiced. Without all of these important factors, nursing would not be where it is today. This concludes it
