Human Geography Final EssayHuman Geography HonorsHumanity will always have to overcome challenges. Three key challenges we are currently facing that require immediate action are overpopulation, land use and cultural conflicts. These issues have been prevalent topics in the media in recent years. Unless we start taking steps to address these concerns, we will continue to see these topics in the media for years to come. Overpopulation is a relatively recent problem. The world population has grown exponentially in the last twenty to thirty years. For example, the country of Bangladesh, with a population density of 1,188 people per square kilometer, has an annual growth rate of 1.2%. Comparing these numbers to the United States' population density of 34 and its growth rate of 0.7%, it is no wonder that the country has an extremely high poverty rate, 31.5% according to the Bank World. As a result, some areas have not been able to adapt to the changing population. The consequences of this failure to adapt are poverty, crime and an overall lower quality of life. Lagos, Nigeria, is a city that best exemplifies this problem. With too few jobs and such a high population (estimated at 21 million) and a density of 18,000 people per square kilometre, the people of Lagos are quite poor, with very few wealthy inhabitants. Because of their poverty, some people return to less orthodox ways of making a living: crime. These crimes include scams, robberies and frauds. As a result of poverty, residents also experience a lower quality of life due to their inability to afford any type of healthcare. Overpopulation can be extremely harmful to a nation's health. Overpopulation can be addressed... middle of paper... genetically modified crops or crops grown with pesticides to their customers without their knowledge. This may worry some consumers, and it is slowly becoming more difficult to purchase non-GMO products from small farms. Therefore, regulations and taxes on agricultural businesses should be eliminated in order for these small alternative farms to appear on the market. The government should also establish special offers or programs for farmers who decide not to sell their properties to suburban developers. Our world today has many issues that need to be addressed. The problems of overpopulation, cultural conflict, and land use not only affect us currently, but if not addressed, will certainly affect us in the future. Therefore, we must address these challenges ahead of us, in order to create a better and brighter future for all of us.
