We have all been there, on the sofa with the remote control in hand, flipping through the television channels. It suddenly stops on a channel showing a burly child no older than 5, but who still appears to be the size of a grossly overweight 8-year-old. You can't help but stop and feel heartbroken as you focus on the story being told about this poor child suffering from extreme levels of obesity and the limitations of daily activities that a normal child of that age group could participate in. The story proceeds to show you the activities of an average day in this child's life, most of which involve snacking on junk food and unhealthy meal portions and contents. A meal usually contains more food than most people would consume over the course of many days. The amount of unhealthy junk food and fast food this child's body ingests over the course of a day is more than a doctor would recommend the average adult eats over the course of a month. The saddest part of this story is that it's not the child's fault; they have no idea of the health risk being imposed on their bodies. This lifestyle is all they know, and if this is the foundation of their life, what chance do they have of living a happy, healthy, productive life? While this may be an extreme case of obesity, and not the average level of obesity that plagues our society, it defiantly represents a good example of the problems that obesity presents not only in the lives of our children but also in the of adults! How many of you remember learning about the food pyramid at school? Now how many of you were able to choose what your meals at home consisted of? If your families were like mine, the choice of what would be... middle of paper... social limitations. The cost of healthy eating is especially important in today's economy, where many families are on a limited budget and cannot afford to bear the high price of healthy eating. Creating a program like the ones above could really help adjust the costs of healthy eating, reducing costs for farmers and increasing the availability of fresh organic food choices. Instilling healthier diets and lifestyles could significantly reduce healthcare costs and insurance costs across the board. This could create a healthy foundation for our children to grow up knowing how to have healthier eating habits and live longer, more productive lives. This may not be the only step towards creating a healthier society, but with proper action, it could be the one that leads many to seek to improve ourselves as a country and build a better future for our children..
