Topic > The Great Military Leader and the Military Budget

Mankind must end war, before war ends mankind, John F. Kennedy. The American military budget is a cause for great concern both for the federal deficit and for the issue of security. While there are many changes to be made to our federal budget, one of the most glaring problems is the amount of money the United States spends on the military. The United States must cut military spending to help reduce the deficit, increase American security, restore America's global outlook in a positive light, and help foreign relations with other governments. The United States had to borrow more than $514 billion last year to cover our national budget, and of the $3.881 trillion budget, $640 billion was used for our military spending. Compared to other world military leaders, the United States spends more than the top eight countries in the world combined, as seen in the graph on the left, clearly there is room for cuts. The United States could cut its military spending by more than 66% and still outspend the next highest military spender, China with $188 billion combined (Peterson Foundation, 2014). Some of the proposed cuts involve troop reductions, downsizing of equipment and vehicles, as well as cuts to global military bases. One of the most staggering statistics that coincides with our military spending compared to other countries is the number of global bases currently owned by the United States compared to them. Keeping up with their 737 global military bases costs the United States over $102 billion annually, not including bases within US borders. As seen in the graph above (right), the United States has more global military bases than any other country, the point and cost of... middle of paper... lly when asked, but no it is no longer necessary that the United States imposes itself on nations separate from its own. America's image can be restored, security can endure, and the federal budget and current deficit can be lightened. In conclusion, American citizens need to reflect on this information and it is important that they think about the future they are creating for themselves and their children. . Do Americans sit at home discussing the military defense of our country thirty or forty years ago, or do American citizens show more concern about the current national deficit, and what will citizens think thirty or forty years from now? Federal spending on our military is the primary target of the cuts, America's security will not be diminished if managed appropriately, and America's wallets will be less impacted if we act now rather than in the future..
