The ability of family members to effectively express their emotions, insights, and ideas to each other reflects how well the members relate to each other and how well the family functions as a whole. According to Kirst-Ashman & Hull (2012) evaluating communication patterns within a family is crucial to the process of planned change that must occur to help families reconcile their problems as best as possible (p.331). There are various aspects of communication besides verbal and non-verbal communication. There are at least five different paths of communication, called communication routes, which include: consonance, condemnation, submission, intellectualization, and indifference (p. 331-332).
