Topic > The Canadian Magazine Dispute over the United States

Magazines are, however, an important means of communication today and served the same purpose as early as 1730. Magazines are periodic publications containing articles and illustrations that typically cover particular areas or topics of interest. This source or medium is available in countries all over the world, and in the case of the twenty-first century, it is easily found anywhere on the Internet. Magazines, however, were more popular in the nineteenth century and were mostly American magazines. American Magazine publications are distributed in many countries around the world. And certainly Canada is the closest, directly north of the United States. Canada has received and continues to receive a significant amount of magazines imported to America, and enthusiastic Canadian customers are the ones who carry on this business, but Canada has a problem with all the foreign media made available to its people. The controversy over the Canadian magazine is the result of one of the most important conflicts regarding cultural issues. The Canadian Media Committee concluded that this is not one of Canada's first attempts to protect its culture from domination by its neighbor. America being much larger, it may also seem like a threat to the much smaller country to the north. Canada imposed protective tariffs on foreign magazines in the 1920s and prohibited the importation of split editions of magazines published abroad in 1965. These actions, in my opinion, are strictly economic and financial rather than the result of any concern cultural. I have a feeling that the controversy over the Canadian magazine was not motivated by an allegedly genuine desire to protect Canadian culture. The fact is that only eleven... half the paper... have their magazines considered national. They have applied taxes in such a way that only foreign publishers have to pay taxes, but this is also unfair. This dispute over Canadian magazines doesn't stop there, but has actually created controversy over Canadian trade. Since the Canadian economy has decided to impose taxes on foreign content, magazine publishers should produce magazines that contain at least eighty percent Canadian content. I think the idea of imposing taxes is wrong in the first place and American magazine producers have also imposed tariffs based on taxes. They voted that the taxes imposed on foreign producers are a measure of discriminatory practice. This dispute began with the idea of wanting to preserve Canadian culture, but escalated to the point of creating a hugely global trade war between the two countries..
