Topic > Living a pluralistic lifestyle that sees diversity...

"Culture", as a word, fits a group of words that do not have just one definition or meaning, but multiple. With a diverse population prevalent in the United States today, our country is a melting pot of diverse cultures, each distinctive in its own respect. Culture distinguishes one social group from another, including beliefs, language, traditions, art, food, religion, and economic systems. Through ongoing and ever-evolving processes of learning and sharing, culture shapes our patterns of behavior and thinking. The meaning of a culture is so philosophical that it touches almost every aspect of who and what we are. As Henslin once said “Culture becomes the lens through which we perceive and evaluate what is happening around us.” It becomes who we are and how we see things differently than people of a different nationality. In Outcasts United by Warren St. John, culture is an important aspect that plays a significant role throughout the book and challenges the refugees in their daily lives. Having a pluralistic society can influence the behavioral and thinking styles of the people living around them. Some of these people can learn from the wide range of cultures to find flaws in their own lifestyles and try to improve them. Liberians, Middle Easterners, and Africans are some of the examples of how one's culture can influence the lives of the people living around them. Starting a new life in a different culture is not easy, but instead it is very difficult to overcome some of the challenges you may encounter. When visitors first arrive in a struggling country like America, they are excited to live the life they've dreamed of for years. But after a certain period of time, they start paying…half-card…for the benefit of every single individual. Clarkston, Georgia has given thousands of refugees a home to live; they provided immigrants with their basic necessities. Some of these new cultures that impacted society to a certain extent were Middle Eastern, African, and Liberian. People in Clarkston have been exposed to a lot of diversity around them which has brought about many changes in society caused by the diverse range of people living there. While some changes have been helpful, others have not been as positive. However, Clarkston ultimately symbolized a perfect model of a pluralistic society that others could look up to and appreciate. People should be accepting of change; you never know, it could change your life forever in a moral way. A good way to look at culture through your eyes is to “see the variety of the world as a blessing rather than a burden” (The Aga Khan).
