It is important to understand how different life situations cause a variety of emotions that affect people in many ways. Very often, the most influential situation in one's life is catastrophic and life-changing. Because people typically dislike change, they are stuck in denial about their reality until they are forced to come to grips with it. In War, a story by Luigi Pirandello, a group of people are forced to listen to each other's stories about the difficulties resulting from the war. Pirandello manipulated the tone of the story to go from dark and disengaged to emotional and sincere to reflect the characters' progression from denial to acceptance. Moving through each character's stories, the author uses a bland tone that results in an emotionally detached feeling for the reader. Along with the lack of specific names for the characters, the disengaged tone meant that the reader had no emotional connection to each character's story.
