Discovered in the 20th century, the Gospel of Thomas was founded by farmers who were digging for fertilizer near the village of Nag Hammadi, Egypt. The farmers found a container containing thirteen leather-bound manuscripts that were buried in the 14th century. The container contained fifty-two treatises representing “heretical” writings by Gnostic Christians. Dating back to 200 AD, not much was known about the Gospel of Thomas, other than the fact that only three small Oxyrhynchus fragments existed. The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of literary works that contains 114 "opaque sayings" of Jesus that were collected and written by St. Didymus Jude Thomas, but no one knows whether St. Didymus Jude Thomas wrote the sayings for certain, it is just said he did. Saint Didymus Jude Thomas was said to be the twin brother of Jesus, assumed by some early Christians. Thomas actually means twin in Hebrew, and Didymus also means twin in Greek. According to precept twelve, the disciples said to Jesus: «We know that you will turn away from us. Who will be our leader?” Jesus said to them: «Wherever you are, go to James the righteous, for whose sake heaven and earth were created» (Gospel of Thomas: saying 12). As I read the Gospel of Thomas and reread saying twelve, I believe Jesus is stating that his brother James is the go-to person, the leader, when they need to be left. I also believe that saying twelve is evidence that, in the second century, someone who admired James was helped to write the Gospel of Thomas. Furthermore, I think that the writer of the Gospel of Thomas most likely had access to the Gospel of John. This is because the writer refers to Jesus as a light. Only the Gospel of John...... middle of paper ...... it is impossible to answer how Christianity would be different if the Gospel of Thomas was in the New Testament because no one could say in detail. However, it could be said with certainty that Christianity as we know it would not exist. The Bible would now contain opposing teachings about salvation. This type of contradiction would certainly lead to confusion and distrust in the veracity of any gospel account. The canonical Gospels can be traced back to the early Church through the writings of the ante-Nicene Church fathers. The Gnostic Gospels cannot be traced to any writer who is connected to Jesus in any way. Furthermore, all the texts of the Old and New Testaments were never questioned among believers, while the Gnostic texts were seen as texts that simply used the name “Jesus” to teach different “truths”..”
