Children of modern society differ on opposite scales from children of previous generations. Anything that doesn't have an on and off switch is considered old-fashioned and obsolete. Our society has accustomed children to surround themselves with electronic devices such as cell phones, MP3 players, game consoles and, above all, television. Television plays a significant role in everyday life as it is more widely available than it was a couple of decades ago. Media is easily accessible through television, allowing both positive and negative influences to occur. The main problems facing parents of today's children are that children are becoming less childish, with video games and television taking up most of their time; they are starting to gain weight under the influence of junk food advertisements and their social skills are starting to fall by the wayside as they spend excessive amounts of time watching television or playing video games. Regulations on the content of food advertisements should be implemented by television authorities such as the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), and time restrictions along with critical monitoring of content should be implemented by parents in order to reduce the negative effects of television and video games about children. the children of modern society. With the constant reminder of the ubiquitous nature of media in modern society, children are becoming less and less childish in their behavior and attitude. In Marie Winn's article entitled “The End of Play”, she discusses the topic of how children today are losing traits of how we traditionally perceive children to behave and are becoming more and more like “tired businessmen” . (Winn, “End of Play” 81...... middle of paper ...... and a child's inability to function socially all have a common factor that ties them together. They are all negatively affected by the presence of television and video games. In reality, the broad spectrum of negative influences that weigh on television and video games can never be completely eliminated at once, but there are certainly solutions to combat the particular influences that pose a threat to the process of growth of video games. Limiting and regulating the amount of time allowed to watch television or encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle instead of a sedentary lifestyle are examples of solutions to preventable problems that are critical to society because, after all, they are who will manage our future and subsequent generations.
