The conflict between Israel and Palestine has deep roots in history, dating back thousands of years, when the Israelites first made their way into the land then known as Canaan . Its peak came in 1948, the year Israel declared its independence (Beinin). Since then, the unstable area of Palestine has become a battlefield for war, terrorism and politics. The two nations have attempted to make agreements, but so far neither has succeeded in creating lasting peace. Since it is unlikely that either Israel or Palestine will completely cede their land to the other nation, a compromise must be reached between the two. The conflict between Israel and Palestine cannot stop unless Israel lifts trade restrictions in the Gaza Strip, ends the occupation and settlements in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and, together with Palestine, recognizes the sovereignty of 'other nation. this centuries-old conflict serves Israel to eliminate unnecessary restrictions in the Gaza Strip. Although Israel officially lifted its occupation of the Gaza Strip in 2005, it continues to control its borders and living conditions remain poor. This Arab territory is only 25 miles long and 10 miles wide, but is home to nearly 1.6 million people. (Waist) By comparison, it is only twice the size of Washington DC (center). The unemployment rate is high and varies from 30 to 58% depending on the age group. There is also a high rate of dependency in Gaza, as over half of the population is under the age of eighteen. Most Palestinians living in Gaza cannot earn enough money to buy food for their families and rely on United Nations aid to provide them with rice and flour. (Life) ...... half of the document ...... if their countries find a two-state solution. (Gravé-Lazi) While this is in no way a guarantee that Israel and Palestine will declare the other nation's sovereignty, it is still a step forward. If Israel and Palestine recognize each other's ability to operate as separate nation-states and come to an agreement on lifting the Israeli occupation and trade restrictions, peace may finally come to the region. Although both nations have experienced economic hardship, occupation and war, recent events have shown that peace is possible. Right now, a new generation is growing up, preparing to take its place in the world. If peace in Palestine and Israel comes to fruition, it will be in their hands. And one day far away, perhaps their descendants will teach their children about the centuries-long conflict and how it was resolved with a handshake and a just resolution..
