Music plays a vital role in narrative films as it is an important technique that filmmakers use to support the narrative and influence how the viewer interacts, responds, and interprets events as they unfold. The Godfather, one of the Hollywood films of all time, represents a good use of music that managed to support the dramatic events that take place in the film. Furthermore, both diegetic and non-diegetic music in the film The Godfather are used to achieve the overall purpose by utilizing the different principles and functions of film music ranging from setting the viewer's mood to providing continuity within the film. In this essay we will take part of the film The Godfather where we will be able to observe and analyze the role of music in the film (00:30:52- 00:35:52) At the beginning of the clip (0:30:52), since the fade takes us from the previous scene where ,Mr. Woltz, a wealthy studio head, angrily rejected Don Vito Corleone's request to cast Johnny Fontane in one of his films, the fade takes us to the next scene where we see Mr. Woltz's house from the outside. As the fade occurs, a diegetic sound of nocturnal insects is heard even before the next scene appears on screen. The diegetic sound of nocturnal insects provides continuity between the first and second scenes and transports the viewer through a temporal ellipse of hours (00:30:49-00:30:53). Also, the sound of nocturnal insects in the next scene (00:30:53-00:31:00) suggests the approaching night and calmness in Mr. Woltz's house and this is to show the difference between the beginning and the end of the scene (00:30:53-00:31:00). Then, as the shot moves closer to Mr. Woltz's bedroom window (00:31:03), non-diegetic music from...... middle of paper......(00:32: 50-00:33:18). Then, the scene returns to Don Corleone listening to Tom Hegan talk about Sollozo. Suddenly, Don Corleons asks Tom Hegan about Sollozo's prison record and then some non-diegetic music focusing our attention on the interesting discussion they have about Sollozo and the decision they should make regarding cooperation with Sollozo. (0:33:19-00 :34:11) In conclusion, the role of music in the selected Godfather clip represents a great use of both diegetic sounds and non-diegetic music that help the viewer of the narrative film illustrate and interpret the dramatic events as they unfold. Furthermore, creating atmosphere, providing continuity between scenes, and intensifying pace and pace were the main functions of film music used in the selected clip to achieve the overall goal of using music in scenes...
