It's not going anywhere. There will always be lonely or kinky men in America willing to pay for sex, and there will always be women willing to rent out their bodies (vice versa). Most of the arguments against legalizing prostitution are ethical arguments. We saw the same arguments against gay marriage and abortion. Those have already become legal, now the question is why prostitution is not legal yet. Legalizing prostitution promotes safety and reduces crime (especially violence against women), introduces greater regulation in the prostitution sector and generates economic profits.
