Human beings have the unique ability to evaluate their own thoughts, feelings, and emotions. They want to know their nature and have an intrinsic need to improve themselves. Humans are naturally ambitious, some more than others. This natural curiosity has advanced our species. From the creation of fire to human rights and natural laws, to the Internet and modern medicine, humans have used this self-reflection to improve their species, protecting their own and taking the natural instinct for survival to excess. We can cure many previously deadly diseases, build great civilizations based on laws, and even eat chemically altered and genetically enhanced products. This purely human type of thinking distinguishes us from other animals. Many nonhuman animals cannot recognize themselves in mirrors, and even those that have the capacity for self-awareness do not yet understand the concept of self-evaluation. Animals do not know how to establish rules and regulations, since their instincts are more important to them. They are not so flexible in their thoughts and habits. Humans, on the other hand, use self-reflection to think about our instincts, making us special by allowing us to reflect on our thoughts.
